Technical Writer Job Description Fairwinds Technologies is a value-added systems integrator of C4ISR technologies providing communications, networking and information technology solutions to the US DoD, Intelligence Community and Department of Homeland Security.
Fairwinds is looking for a technical writer for interactive electronic Technical Manuals.
We are looking for a driven and detail-oriented Sr.
Technical Writer to perform technical writing functions.
The successful candidate has previous experience in this field and is flexible and adaptable to rapidly changing situations.
You must be extremely results driven.
Location: On-Site, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland The Senior Technical Writer must possess the skill to design and develop a complete technical and end user product documentation suite.
Must have thorough knowledge of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS), government off-the-shelf (GOTS) and TRADOC requirements and writing structures.
Responsibilities Interpret, author, and operate within confinement of Statement of Work (SOW), System Requirement Document (SRD) and the Verification Cross-Reference Matrix (VCRM) to meet contractual requirements.
Research and translate technical information into training materials, manuals, or web-based documents for technical and non-technical audiences.
Develop and organize material for technical training programs and related materials and/or interactive courseware for customer.
Plan, design, implement and maintain computer-based or web-based training modules as required.
Work with customers and functional organizations to establish course objectives, contents, and outcomes.
Prepare lesson plans from engineering documentation, software documentation, vendor manuals or field service requirements.
Develop materials for instructor to provide to participants in classroom lectures and laboratory sessions.
Develop surveys allowing Fairwinds to analyze responses to determine applicability of course material and adequacy of training presentation.
Ensure course materials reflect current product features, making updates as required.
Develop, format, review, quality control and maintain various Maintenance Manuals and Software Users/Administrators Manuals.
Participate in Technical Manual In-Process Reviews (IPRs), technical manual validations, and verifications.
Record and maintain technical corrective actions (CRM).
Minimum Qualifications Must be US Citizen Must Possess an ACTIVE SECRET DoD Clearance Bachelor’s degree in a technology field with 9 years of relevant experience, or an associate degree, graduation from a military or commercial electronics course with a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience Technical Training/Writing experience with MIL-STD-45001-1 (or current version), MIL-HDBK-1222, MIL-STD-3031/ASD, MIL-PRF-63002, MIL-PRF-63033 Experience using XML.
Experience redlining technical manuals.
Experience making redline changes in IADS, will be making live updates and correcting all errors found in Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) or Extensible Markup Language (XML) instance and graphics during verification events.
Understanding of MIL-STD-40051-1D and TRADOC Regulation 350-70 Understanding of GVT/TRADOC processes and procedures Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Works extremely well under tight deadlines.
Possess creative thinking skills.
Possess excellent time management skills.
Proficient with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, Project, PowerPoint, etc.
Additional Skills That Will Set You Apart Military Instructor experience w/Formal Instructor course, master training specialist Curriculum development experience a plus.
Proven ability to generate and update technical instructional material.
Electronic Technical Manual (ETM) and Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETM) experience.
Previous government contracting.
Technical illustrator experience helpful.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work This is a full-time, exempt position.
Work Authorization/Security Clearance: Must be eligible to work in the US.
