Position Title: Library Assistant - Youth Services
Classification: Part-time, Non-exempt
Reports to: Youth Services Manager
The Library Assistant in the Youth Services Department addresses the information needs of patrons including children, tweens, teens, parents, and teachers.
This individual works closely with colleagues to plan and implement an exciting array of programs for children, tweens, and teens.
In addition, the Library Assistant facilitates the Summer Reading Program (SRP).
Responsibilities include:
Assist patrons with the use of library resources and services
Readers Advisory for patrons based on age, interest, and reading level
Plan and implement programs which are educational, entertaining, and enriching
Perform shelving and other tasks as assigned
Facilitate special projects at the direction of the Youth Services Manager
Assist patrons with program registration
Coordinate programs run by outside presenters, assist presenter with set-up, and check in registered patrons
Conduct staff run programs as assigned by the Youth Services Manager
Explain the SRP to patrons and distribute reading logs at the beginning of the summer
Collect SRP logs from participants who completed the SRP and distribute prizes based on age level
Assist patrons in the use of the copier, printer, self- check stations
Troubleshoot public computer problems patrons encounter
Record statistics as directed by the Youth Services Manager
Enforce the Library's Code of Conduct Policy
Address safety concerns immediately
Report significant issues to management
Keep the Children's Library neat and orderly by straightening shelves, chairs, and computer workstations
Check in and check out library materials
Promote a pleasant and welcoming atmosphere in the library
Attend training workshops when needed or requested by the Youth Services Manager
Handle patron grievances and report those to the Executive Director
Promote literacy, intellectual freedom and equal access to information
Maintain patron and staff confidentiality and ethical behavior in all library matters
Perform other duties as requested by the Youth Services Manager
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Must enjoy working with children, tweens, and teens
Capable of performing in a fast paced, dynamic environment
Ability to work as both a member of a team and independently
Adept at multi-tasking
Computer literacy skills including Microsoft Office, Integrated Library System (ILS), email, internet
Excellent customer service skills
Ability to interact with patrons in a pleasant, professional manner
Comfortable learning new technologies
Capable of instructing patrons in the use of technology
Reliable in meeting established work schedule
Ability to lift 30 pounds, push carts weighing 50 pounds, and shelve materials on high as well as low shelves
Knowledge of Children's and Young Adult literature, public library resources, and services
Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
Ability to exercise sound, independent judgment within general policy guidelines
Flexible schedule including evening and weekend hours
Qualifications:
High School Diploma required
Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred or an equivalent combination of experience sufficient to successfully perform the job
Public library experience preferred
Must pass Pennsylvania Criminal Background Check, Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance and FBI Fingerprint Based Federal Criminal History
