Description
JOB GOAL: To ensure that students are properly identified using the WAPT screener, home language survey and other procedures as outlined by PDE per the BED.
In addition, to communicate, using translation/interpretation services with parents and students, the benefits of ESL services and the role of the ESL department in their child’s education.
Finally, to communicate with the ESL Coordinators, Coaches and Teachers in regards to specific student strengths and needs.
Essential and Marginal Functions
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Emphasis on technology and software programs
Organize and maintain all materials and records in functioning order.
Create an atmosphere that is conducive to testing, including technology usage.
Discuss with parents the benefits of ESL services.
Utilize translation services as needed for all parent and student communication.
Display cultural competency when working with various cultures and languages.
Ensure and maintain communication with school staff in regards to each student’s enrollment.
Demonstrate and maintain current knowledge in technology.
Incorporate equipment6 and apparatus and use technology where possible to supplement instruction.
Maintain student records including all required paperwork.
Be available for educational purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested, including summer.
Demonstrate appropriate planning and the usage of a variety of instruction techniques and strategies.
Provide teachers with resources and strategies appropriate for LEP students including specific supports for newly enrolled ELLs.
Attend staff meetings and department meetings.
Exhibit life-long learning practices (Continuing Education/Staff Development participation).
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:
Assist in emergency situations.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
Appropriate PA teacher certification with ESL endorsement.
Bachelor’s degree required in appropriate major study.
Master’s degree preferred.
Strong motivational, communication and organizational skills.
Ability to utilize technology in order to screen students for ESL services to include data manipulation and operation of statistical software programs.
Ability to effectively communicate with, instruct, and work with students and parents while using translation services if needed.
Mastery of PDE guidelines for ESL enrollment, screening and other procedures.
Such alternatives to the above that the Board may find acceptable and appropriate.
